El poder terapéutico de la oración / The healing power of prayer

Está entrada está disponible en español.
This post is available in english (at the end of spanish post)

THE HEALING POWER OF PRAYER

I live with the personal conviction that Prayer, besides of being healthy, creates the circumstances that provides the basis to help healing. Therefore, I have to confess that I love the research conducted by my admirable colleague, the cardiologist Randolph Byrd from California, who has had the courage to study 393 patients from the Coronary Unit at San Francisco Hospital, he could observe that patients, who were receiving prayers, were progressing significantly better than those who were not included in this "therapy", as published in the Southern Medical Journal.

The same happened in the study of 900 patients carried out by the American Heart Institute in Kansas (USA) published in the medical journal Archives of Internal Medicine, this study could find amazing recoveries, with a shorter hospital stay to the patients who received prayers.

Similar outcomes were presented in another study made at Rabin Medical Centre (Israel), published in the British Medical Journal, this research notes that prayer produces significant changes in the development of the disease, to the point that repeating a prayer helps with relaxation, decreases high blood pressure, metabolic, heart and breathing rhythms.

The influence of prayer on the body and human mind is as real as the heartbeat. In fact, its results can be measured in terms of greater health, greater wellbeing, greater intellectual capacity, and a better understanding of the reality in which is developed our human relationships. Dr. Herbert Benson, cardiologist and professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, has conducted researches that are extended from laboratory to clinic, his work prepares a bridge between medicine and religion, mind and body, faith and science.

No doubt, prayer defines our actions and behaviors, to the point that people who have the habit of praying live with more inner peace, revealing tranquility and showing another expression on their faces because, deep within you, in your their consciousness shine a light: "Pray means to direct the heart to god, when a person prays, sets a vibrant relationship with Him."

When we practice prayer we begin to find ourselves. We begin to cultivate an ethical sense of solidarity, solidarity with the weakest, discovering our selfishness, our vanity and our follies. Properly understood, prayer is indispensable for the full development of the personality, and for the integration of the deepest faculties of a human being. And it is through prayer how we can achieve harmonization and unification of "body, mind and spirit,"this is what gives the frail human constitution its invincible strength. Dr. Targ Fisher (chess master niece), graduated from Stanford and Professor of Psychiatry at California University in San Francisco, has also shown in her studies the positive role of spirituality in the healing process.

Accordingly, as a medical (Catholic, Apostolic and Roman) practitioner I have seen deranged and desperate patients due to all kinds of therapies. I have seen these patients overcome diseases and suffering thanks to their devotion to prayer. Many patients have discovered that prayer provides them with a steady stream of power that keeps them unchanged in their daily lives.

I remember every day the funeral of my father (98 years old), because I was pleasantly surprised when my dear José María García, the best sports writer in the history, he said; "Manuel, I will always have your father in my prayers." That message was very influential in my life. Today I have to reveal a secret, José María overcame a severe illness by his prayers and he knows better than anyone that "Faith moves mountains".

Moreover, one of the experiences I have had and what struck me most is when an "atheist" feels that the moment to die is close and he /she begs to his/ her doctor to call a priest to give him/her the last rites and at the last minute he/she becomes a convert and enter at the Kingdom of Heaven.

In these situations I always remember the enigmatic scientist Louis Pasteur, who discovered vaccines, he passed away with a rosary in hand (like my grandmother) after hearing the life of St. Vincent de Paul, because he thought it would help to save the suffering children.

The influence of prayer is so powerful that Dr. Larry Possey, realized that it does not matter whether prayer comes from Christian, Buddhist, Protestant, Hindu or Muslim, the effect is also positive. Through prayer your spirit is in contact with the Supreme Being, Invisible, and Creator of all things.

Prayer brings us into the supernatural dimension of God, as noted by Dr. David Larson, radiation oncologist by Harvard University, and author of over 200 scientific articles, and according to his studies; "Cultivate communication with God renews our mood and change our attitude towards disease."

Here I am reminded of Albert Einstein, Nobel Prize in Physics. He claimed; "There are two ways to live a life: the first is to think that nothing is a miracle, the second that everything is a miracle, but the one thing I am certain about is that God exists."

In conclusion, there is scientific evidence that prayer is the only power in the world that can beat the Laws of Nature. The results obtained through prayer are called "Miracles". It is exciting to watch doctors who have gone from agnosticism to immense faith by studying cases of patients who have been cured by relying on prayer. In fact, there are sacred sites such as Lourdes where it has been able to validate miraculous healings. This his is the reason why it has been set up an International Scientific Medical Committee, the main aim of the eminent physicians is to confirm and verify the healing process.

Personally, I have no doubt that this is the case.  In conclusion, prayer is a man´s effort to reach God to the point that when we turn to Him in earnest prayer, we can note an improvement of both soul and body. Here, I am thinking of Epictetus, the Stoic. He stated "Let’s think more frequently in God than the number of breaths you need”.

But since today I'm inspired it comes to my mind Antonio Salieri, the great composer of Vienna Chamber Imperial Court and Joseph II of Habsburg. He usually had dialogues with God one day begged. Him to grant the same "Gift "than Mozart. Failing to get his whim, he decided to challenge God, he broke the crucifix that usually prayed and he decided to concentrate its malignancy in Mozart. This made him sick and suffered unto death, as described in Amadeus, a masterpiece of the great British writer Peter Shaffer. Salieri lived his last years tormented in a mental institution, where he committed suicide, which is the largest human catastrophe. I am one of those who believe we should not look back in anger, nor forward in fear, but around in awareness.

Personally, I suggest you to avoid two big mistakes, the first live with hatred, it is the most insane and the only antidote is forgiveness and the second one ask God to gratify our whims.

Summarizing and returning to the aforementioned scientific evidence, validated by Alexis Carrel, my favorite convert, Nobel Prize in Medicine, prayer is a force as real as the rotation of the earth; "It is an invisible emanation of the man´s spirit in the most powerful way that a man can generate". Anyway, if you acquire this habit "your life changes", which is the same as saying, true prayer shapes life and real life requires prayer. Do you believe in God? Yes, thank God.

No doubt, the scientific-religious debate about whether prayer helps healing is still open, there are many controversies and it seems clear that there are difficulties to assess its effectiveness because "there is no way to put God to the test."

My conclusion: The Power of Healing, the power of prayer and the power of medicine can be a powerful force for healing, and this sets the therapeutic arsenal which is the art of a great doctor.

And, it is precisely in the power of medicine where I will make another turning point and I will dedicate my soul in this blog in order to get all philosophical and spiritual aspects, already mentioned. To constitute the foundation of all pharmacological, biomedical and biotechnological innovations to facilitate healing, hereafter with a strictly scientific view, bearing in mind Rolling Stones sentence, my favourite band, “Not always you can get what you want, but you get what you need".

El poder de curar / The power to cure

Esta entrada está disponible en español
This post is available in english (at the end of the spanish post)

THE POWER TO CURE

Active listening is the essence of the art of medicine. Doing well is the hardest part to overcome and the hardest part of learning. The consequences of not listening are very important. In fact, one of the great mistakes is interrupting the patient 15 seconds after has started to explain what happens to him/her. There is a fundamental aphorism as stated by Gregorio Marañón "if everything else fails, why not to try listening to the patient?". I have been exposed to his written materials thanks to the persistence and the example set by my father.

80% or more of the problems that a patient tells to the doctor are trivial; I mean they are not cancer or heart attacks. As Hipocrates argued “They are diseases that heal with time”. On the other hand, Norman Cousins, a great American writer, said that the Americans believe they are going to live all their lives until they get flu. Then, when this happens, they think they will die in 10 days. Conclusion: the health achieves its maximum value only when is lost.

No doubt, information is an integral part of the therapy, in fact, there is clear evidence that patients well informed get a better improvement than those uninformed. Accesible and timely information is therefore essential to support the treatment of any type of diseases, as established by Ramón y Cajal.

Patient information must be accompanied by an admirable treatment, doctor-patient empathy, mutual trust, respect, and finally patient-centred medicine, which are ultimately the main ingredients of patient´s needs. Doctor-patient relationship is a partnership of these feelings, if we know how to optimize the feelings we can heal. In addition to these ethical principles, my spiritual mentor, Tomeu Catalá would add discipline and love.

Other essential physician´s component is being able to manage patient´s emotions and, in this regard, dealing tactfully with patient's emotions is a key aspect that influences decisively in their health-healing process. By this, I mean the physician´s skills on how we communicate, inform and motivate the patient. It can be read in “The Motivation´s Circle” from my close colleague Dr. Valentin Fuster. A diagnosis has to be done with accuracy, clarity and at the same time providing solutions, informing about the most appropriate treatment and based on scientific evidence.

Accordingly, it is exciting to remind Moliere in his masterpiece "The Imaginary Invalid" where he mentioned the hypochondriac patient. Around 20% of the population is hypochondriac. They are more vulnerable to physician´s information than others. The physician has to be more sensitive when giving a formal diagnosis or treatment.

However, the starting point to cure is the "physician´s intention “. It is essential to perform a focused clinical practice (with 5 senses involved), as per Severo Ochoa´s criteria, Nobel Prize in Medicine. This shows us the reality. Usually, patient´s problems explained to physicians are the result of the life itself such as having chronic stress as a result of being in a permanent state of alert, being exposed to risk factors, suffering emotional shocks, losing family members and often not knowing how to cross “the maze" that leads to the healing treatment.

I intend to use this blog, precisely on this point, helping patients to know the most innovative drugs and technological treatments that can cure their disease, such as the stem cell therapy, immunosorben, percutaneous heart valves, surgical robots and genetic information through molecular biology, among many others, not forgetting, traditional medicine, such as high doses of vitamin C experienced by Linus Pauling, a wise and admirable Nobel Prize in Medicine.

What I can say is that there are numerous pharmacological and technological advances that can heal, however they do not reach the patient, due to ignorance. Certainly in this era of continuous transformation of health, this Blog will be the witness of how medicine is undergoing a time of great technological possibilities, the existence of significant expectations around science results, its potential contribution to curing disease improving quality of life and life expectancy, with the aim of living 100 years as stated in the latest United Nations report. This is a reality in the long-lived carriers APoB Gene, also known as Methuselah.

I also want to consider the Power of Prayer, therapeutic force, where there is an invisible emanation of the man´s spirit, which is the most powerful form of energy that man can generate. In this respect, there is scientific evidence of the prayer´s positive influence on the human mind and body. These research conducted by my “favourite convert” Dr. Alexis Carrel, Nobel Prize in Medicine, on which we will do a turning point in this Blog.

Finally, I got to these reflections thanks to Dr. Bernard Lown, cardiologist and Nobel Peace Prize. He taught me in 1997 all these principles and values that today constitute the foundation of my professional career and I wish to share with you.

Therefore, we will be discovering these advances in this blog, which I start today with great enthusiasm, with a solidarity vocation towards patients, as I have learned from Father Garralda.
